As soon as Ford announced the raptor version of its new Ranger, everyone was in awe. We expect to see one in the USA, but it will take some time until it gets here. Until now, let’s see it versus a US competitor like the Chevy Colorado ZR2, the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and the F-150 Raptor. Our main goal is to know which of these two – Ford Raptor Ranger and Colorado ZR2 – would win in terms of engine, suspensions, electronics and also price.
Ford Raptor Ranger Versus Colorado ZR2: Engine and Suspension
When the Ranger Raptor will come to the US, we’ll see it with a twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel engine. Compared to the one on the ZR2, we’d say it’s a tiny engine, as the latter comes in at 2.8 liters.
But the second turbo wins the race, as the Ranger Raptor has 210 horsepower and the Chevy only has 181.
The suspension system is highly developed by Ford, and they deserve the gold standard for the off-road and high-speed truck suspension. The Ranger Raptor has 11.1 inches of ground clearance and a 32.5-degree approach angle.
Looking at the Colorado ZR2, we’ll see 8.9 inches of ground clearance and a 30-degree approach angle. But these guys worked with the Canadian Multimac and have a DSSV suspension setup, using a different technology: Spool Valve shock tech, which offers more control. Both the Ford GT and the Camaro ZL1 1LE have this tech for their suspension.
Ford Raptor Ranger Versus Colorado ZR2: Electronics
The Ford will be available with a six-way Terrain Management mode, including Baja Mode.
Its competitor has nine configurations for the powertrain, also coming with two and four-wheel-drive modes and the ‘Off-Road Mode’.
Ford Raptor Ranger Versus Colorado ZR2: Price
The price is usually a very important factor when it comes to choosing a car.
The Colorado ZR2 starts at $42,000, but has a very long list of options. And if you want to get the diesel version, it will cost you extra.
For the Ranger Raptor there is no pricing yet, but it might start around $40,000.
With all these details, excluding the unknown price, we’d go for the Ranger Raptor, even though its engine is a bit smaller. But it does have more horsepower and the gold standard suspension too. And, who knows? It might also be available at a nice price.
