When you lose weight, it can benefit your heart by reducing its workload on it. Carrying excess weight places additional pressure on your heart, which has to work harder to circulate blood throughout your body. By shedding some pounds, you can relieve some of that pressure and potentially lower your risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions.
A new study that NBC NEWS writes about says that losing weight can benefit your heart’s health even if you add some of the weight back afterward.
Fewer chances of dealing with heart disease and Type 2 diabetes
Losing weight, even if some weight is gained back, can help reduce the risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes in the long run, according to the new study in question that analyzed data from 124 clinical trials with over 50,000 participants. The study found that risk factors for heart disease and diabetes decreased for people who lost weight through intensive behavioral programs, and that the reduced risk persisted for years after the programs ended.
While the average weight loss across the studies was 5-10 pounds, the average weight regain was 0.26-0.7 pounds a year. The findings support the idea that weight loss can lead to improvements in risk factors for heart disease, even when the amounts are not large.
There are numerous ways to lose weight, and the effectiveness of each method can vary depending on the individual’s body type, lifestyle, and overall health. Some common ways to lose weight include:
- Reducing caloric intake: Consuming fewer calories than you burn can result in weight loss over time.
- Increasing physical activity: Incorporating more exercise into your routine can help you burn more calories and lose weight.
- Eating a healthy diet: Focusing on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can provide the nutrients your body needs while helping you manage your weight.
- Drinking plenty of water: Staying hydrated can help regulate your metabolism and reduce feelings of hunger.
- Getting enough sleep: Lack of sleep can interfere with weight loss efforts, so getting enough rest is essential.
First and foremost, a strong motivation is primordial when it comes to losing enough weight.
