Earthquakes between magnitude 6.1 and 6.9 have the potential of causing a lot of damage in very populated areas. In other words, once such a jolt kicks in, the only wise thing to do is head for cover.
According to WTVB, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake rumbles the Kermadec Islands that are located near New Zealand. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) brought the news. There are barely any people living in the area, so most probably, nobody got hurt.
No need to worry about a tsunami
According to the US Tsunami Warning System, there’s no need to worry about a tsunami coming after the earthquake.
The Kermadec Islands represent a subtropical island arc of only 33.6 square kilometers located in the South Pacific Ocean 800-1,000 km northeast of the North Island of New Zealand.
According to Wikipedia, there are only about six people living in the Kermadec Islands.
The USGS also reveals that the recent quake from the Kermadec Islands had a depth of 40 km.
