The American author famous for his campaign against vaccination has been denied a visa to visit Australia in December. He had planned to give a speaking tour there in December.
The immigration office explains
The World Health Organization has repeatedly categorized vaccinations as safe and vital to spreading infectious diseases. Australia banned last month to other anti-vaccination advocated from entering its territory. It is clear that the country is against those who speak ill of immunization. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton addressed the issue and confirmed that Heckenlively is indeed not allowed to step into Australian territory. He named those against vaccination dangerous people. His statement was given for the local radio station 2GB.
More on the anti-vax movement
Australia banned last month two anti-vaccination advocates, Polly Tommey and Suzanne Humphreys. The ban for the British and the U.S campaigners is for three years. The two claim that there is a link between vaccines and autism, statement which has been discredited by science. The movement started due to severe allergic reactions in a small number of people. However, the benefits outweigh the risks. Widespread vaccination reduces infection risks to those who are not able to receive the vaccine due to medical conditions.
Australia wants its children vaccinated
The Australian government and medical specialists are deeply concerned about the new hippy movements against vaccination. They fear that this would start an epidemic since children live in communities, go to school together and at the playground they come in contact with others. So far this year Australia has considered passing a law entitled unofficially “no jab, no play”. This law on childcare specifies that unvaccinated children are not allowed to enter certain facilities such as school or playgrounds. The topic is certainly what everyone is talking about right now.
