New Study Measures the Effectiveness of Covid-19 Vaccines in Patients Requiring Medical Care

Health experts, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and world leaders have been trying to end the new coronavirus pandemic. Since its debut back in 2019, several Covid-19 vaccines have become available. However, the FDA has issued emergency authorization for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, while Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines were fully authorized in August this year.

The Effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines differ depending on several variables

A recent study measured the effectiveness of U.S-approved Covid-19 vaccines in patients needing ambulatory or ICU care. Each Covid-19 vaccine has its effectivity rates, depending on the Covid-19 variant and other variables, such as the time span between the two doses and more. To provide more data regarding the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines, the study analyzed data from more than 41,552 Covid-19 positive patients admitted to more than 187 hospitals across the U.S and over 21,522 patients who went to the emergency rooms in over 221 clinics.

To determine the effectiveness of the vaccines, the authors of the study took into consideration the vaccination status of each patient. They managed to determine the odds of vaccinated patients getting the Covid-19 infection compared to the unvaccinated ones. Other characteristics taken into account were age, the patients’ weight, geographic region, calendar time, and more.

Results of the study

According to the statistics, after 14 days from the second dose, mRNA vaccines were 89% effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection leading to hospitalization, 91% effective against the infection leading to emergency care unit visits, and 90% effective against infections leading to ICU hospitalizations.

The Ad26.COV2.S vaccines proved to be 68% effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection leading to hospitalization and 73% effective against infection leading to emergency care visits. The results are positive and prove that the three Covid-19 vaccines used in the U.S are highly effective in preventing hospitalizations and severe symptoms.

The U.S needs the vaccines to avoid grim predictions

Recent predictions estimate that the U.S might have around 2.400 Covid deaths in the future, and to avoid it, more people need to get vaccinated. The cold season is approaching, and so is the flu season. Doctors believe the influenza season will become a second pandemic taking place at the same time as the Covid-19 one.
