Tomatoes may slow the development of stomach cancer, but they should be consumed whole, according to Italian scientists.
The discovery will provide the opportunity to conduct research on how to prevent stomach cancer and how diets can be used to support normal treatments.
The findings of scientists at the Center for Oncology Research in Mercogliano, Italy, show that tomatoes reduce the ability of cancer cells to spread and develop, even destroying them.
Experts worked with extracts of tomato varieties San Marzano and Corbarino, which are common in Italy. This finding contradicts the results of studies to date that the benefits of tomatoes were due to specific compounds such as lycopene.
