Recently, there have been two studies published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases which are addressing coronavirus cases on the cruise ship.
The studies talk about the COVID-19 passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship. One of the two studies mentioned above revealed that some infected patients have a lung infection with viral shedding but no symptoms.
It’s also worth noting the fact that the other study suggested that advanced age, severe lung involvement, and reduced lymphocyte count are risk factors for the disease progression.
Analyzing cruise ships’ environments
Cruise ships are confined environments that are stimulating the living conditions and the social interactions of a city and they offer experts the chance to define viral shedding patterns and patient antibody responses before and after symptom onset in an older population with various immunization and health statuses. This is what the authors of the first study noted.
“The proximity of passengers and crew members in a semi-enclosed environment, with interactions in the dining halls, recreational rooms, spas, and pools, creates a unique environment for the person-to-person transmission of microbes,” experts said.
The Diamond Princess cruise ship was quarantined in Yokohama, Japan, back in February amid a COVID-19 outbreak that managed to sicken 712 (19%) of 3,711 passengers, and that killed 13.
