It’s been revealed that a lot of mass immunization efforts all over the world have been halted during the spring in order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus at crowded sites. The consequences are alarming according to the latest reports.
The poor countries around the world are struggling to beat back the coronavirus but it seems that they are in fact, contributing to massive explosions of illness and death coming from other diseases, some diseases can are prevented by vaccines already.
Illness and death comes from other diseases
NYTimes revealed that during the spring, after the WHO and UNICEF warned that the pandemic could spread when children gathered for shorts, a lot of countries have suspended the inoculation programs. The countries that tried to keep them going were affected as well because the cargo flights with vaccine supplies have been halted by the pandemic and health workers diverted to fight it.
The online publication mentioned above reported that “diphtheria is appearing in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Cholera is in South Sudan, Cameroon, Mozambique, Yemen and Bangladesh. A mutated strain of poliovirus has been reported in more than 30 countries.
And measles is flaring around the globe, including in Bangladesh, Brazil, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Nigeria and Uzbekistan.”
Disruption of immunization has terrible effects
The same online publication quotes the WHO.
“Immunization is one of the most powerful and fundamental disease prevention tools in the history of public health,” according to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the W.H.O.
He continued and explained that the “Disruption to immunization programs from the Covid-19 pandemic threatens to unwind decades of progress against vaccine-preventable diseases like measles.”
