The Sh2-54 Nebula (also known as Sharpless 54) is a cosmic cloud of gas and dust located in the constellation of Serpens. It could be a popular ‘destination’ for interstellar tourists, thanks to its stunning displays of shimmering colors and swirling gases.
But what makes the Sh2-54 Nebula truly unique is its shape. It resembles a giant bowl of fruit punch, complete with a cherry on top! That’s right; this nebula is a celestial treat for the eyes and the taste buds.
Thanks to the powers of the VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) telescope, which is placed at the Paranal Observatory of European Southern Observatory in Antofagasta (Chile), we can now admire the nebula in a new light.
A new infrared ‘perspective’
The VISTA telescope has captured the nebula in infrared light, according to CNN. Observing space objects in infrared light can be very useful for studying certain types of objects that may not be visible in visible light. This is because infrared light has longer wavelengths than visible light and can therefore penetrate through dust and gas that might obscure objects in visible light.

The Sh2-54 Nebula is a relatively nearby nebula. as it’s located about 5,000 light-years away from Earth. It can be seen with a telescope or a long-exposure photograph.
While it may seem like a vast distance, the Sh2-54 Nebula is actually considered to be relatively close by cosmic standards. There are many nebulae located much farther away from Earth, some of which are located hundreds of thousands or even millions of light-years away.
If you’re ever in the mood for some stargazing, you might want to head down to Chile and visit the VISTA telescope. This giant telescope is located at the Paranal Observatory in the Atacama Desert, and it’s known for having some of the best views of the night sky on the entire planet.
