You might have the best memory in town, but life will still pull you down at one point or another. None of us will be forgiven, and we have to comply with it. It’s also normal to have some level of forgetfulness, such as not remembering where you left your keys from time to time. It can literally happen to anyone, and such scenarios don’t usually represent a reason to be concerned.
But forgetting stuff can sometimes signal a more dangerous outcome that could be on its way, such as cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s, or other forms of dementia. Therefore, there are definitely moments when we should get worried about our forgetfulness.
Memory loss is a problem when it really affects our lives
Thanks to The Conversation, we now find out when we should start worrying about our level of forgetfulness. If we forget why we are in a room or where we are supposed to go as we leave the house, those could be indicators that our level of forgetfulness could lead us to something worse. In other words, forgetting becomes a real problem when it affects our usual day-to-day living.
One fascinating thing about our brains is that forgetting, until some point, is more of a feature rather than a flaw. Our brains naturally forget events that are not considered important in order to avoid stress or issues with our metabolism.
It’s also not always up to us to remember what we consider important. Surely many of us have memories that are unbearable, and we want them eliminated for good. But our brains naturally decide on their own what memories to keep stored and which ones to eliminate.
In other words, there’s no use in assuming we have Alzheimer’s or rushing over to the doctor as soon as we forget where we’ve put our phone.
