Greenhouse gas emissions have started to reach alarming levels in many regions, but in 2017 Australia has faced one of the highest levels in history. According to NDEVR Environmental consultants, when the phenomenon was registered, another issue was land clearing and deforestation. In this case, the data could seem unreliable, but even if we consider the high level of deforestation and land clearing, we cannot deny the fact that greenhouse gas emissions have been a continuous rising trend since 2011.
This is a serious problem that affects not only the Australian society, with all that implies, but also the country’s place in world organizations and international agreements. Just to give an example, we can mention that Australia has reached a point when its’ commitment for protecting the environment and assumed under the Paris Agreement cannot be reached.
Despite the fact that the country lowered the level of emissions coming from the electricity sector and increased the use of renewable energy, these efforts were not enough. In addition, Australia has also closed Hazelwood, its’ dirtiest coal power station, but there is still more to be done if they want to stick to the Paris Agreement.
What are the greenhouse gas emissions
Greenhouse gas emissions are dangerous for the environment and people. They are born as the result of methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. These gases make the ozone layer thinner, so the solar radiations coming from Earth can pass through the atmosphere and produce extreme heath. As you can imagine, greenhouse gas emissions are more likely to happen in hot areas, like Australia, but pollution and global warming have turned the entire world into a possible target for the phenomenon.
The Government has taken some measures, but it’s time to do more; they have to put every effort into preventing greenhouse gas emissions. They could apply a better, more efficient policy for protecting the environment. Citizens have to participate and support the Government’s initiatives, because otherwise, their health is at big risk.
