The results of recent study may have shed light on one of the enigmas surrounding Crohn’s disease, a kind of inflammatory bowel illness in which the body’s immune systems, which are supposed to battle invading germs, erroneously target the body’s own digestive tract instead. The norovirus is a virus that affects many people and may cause them to get ill. It is also one of numerous viruses and bacteria that are believed to induce illness development in persons who have Crohn’s disease; however, the science does not know the reason for this hypothesis.
The new study that was conducted in mice and in body cells and released on October 5, 2022 in the journal Nature showed for the first time that in healthy humans, immune defenders called T cells express a protein that is termed apoptosis inhibitor 5 (API5). This protein sends a signal to the immune system to cease the assault that it is having on gut lining cells. Because this protein provides an additional barrier of defense against immune system harm, even those who carry the mutation may have a healthy digestive tract. However, the researchers also found that infection with the norovirus prevents T cell release of API5 in mice engineered to develop a rodent type of Crohn’s disease, which results in the death of gut lining cells.The study results confirm the notion that API5 protects the majority of individuals with the mutation from the sickness until a second trigger, such as an infection with norovirus, pushes some people over the disease threshold. The research was led by experts from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
Results in mice
Mice that were genetically engineered to have the mutation that is associated with Crohn’s disease in people were used in the tests. Mice who got an injection of API5 lived, but half of the mice in the untreated category passed away. The authors of the research found that this proved their theory that the protein protects cells in the digestive tract. The researchers looked at human tissue and discovered that people with Crohn’s disease had between five and ten times less API5-producing T cells in their gut tissue than healthy people did. This was compared to those who did not have the condition.
