Myocarditis is not something to take lightly at all, as it causes shortness of breath, decreased ability to exercise, chest pain, and an irregular heartbeat. If complications occur, the patient can even suffer heart failure.
According to Reuters, a US vaccine safety working group is investigating cases of heart inflammation occurring in young people after taking COVID-19 vaccines. However, most cases reported until now are considered mild.
There could be no link between COVID vaccinations and the heart inflammations
Myocarditis is also a pretty common condition, and the rate seen in vaccinated people isn’t different from the baseline expected in the population. Although it could be no link between the vaccinations and myocarditis,more investigation is needed for a certain response. Researchers are currently reviewing records and asking clinicians to report cases.
Dr. Amesh Adalja, who is a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, spoke to Reuters while referring to the benefits of the vaccines. Adalja said that even if a link is established, “vaccines are going to unequivocally be much more beneficial outweighing this very low, if conclusively established, risk.”
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Advisory Committee on Immuniation Practices from the US reveals that myocarditis cases are occurring more often for teenagers and young adults, in males and at about four days after they received the second mRNA vaccine shot by either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna.
In the US, 286 million vaccine doses for COVID have been administered so far, according to Bloomberg. For last week, an average of 1.83 million vaccine doses was administered in the country for each day. According to the same source, over 1.65 billion vaccine doses were administered worldwide, meaning enough to fully vaccinate 10.8% of the entire population of the planet.
However, it’s still a pretty long road up ahead until things will return to normal in the US, without pandemic restrictions. Anthony Fauci, who is the top infectious-disease official from the country, revealed that vaccinating 70% to 85% of the population would make it possible for life to return to normal.
