The world is anxiously awaiting for a viable coronavirus vaccine and useful treatments. Experts from around the globe are working together to fight this new coronavirus pandemic that changed our lives.
A greater risk lurks around the corner
It’s been just revealed that Microsoft founder, Bill Gates is warning people that Covid-19 medications, treatments and future vaccines should be distributed to the people who need them most and not to the highest bidder.
“If we just let drugs and vaccines go to the highest bidder, instead of to the people and the places where they are most needed, we’ll have a longer, more unjust deadlier pandemic,” Gates recently said.
“We need leaders to make these hard decisions about distributing based on equity, not just on market-driven factors,” he continued.
There are all kinds of concerns about wealthier nations regarding receiving more drugs than developing countries.CNBC noted that there have been lots of calls for future vaccines to be treated as public goods for everyone, without a profit involved.
21 candidate vaccines
Another thing worth noting is the fact that the WHO said that there are 21 candidate vaccines at the moment – these are currently in clinical trials and they are being tested on human volunteers.
U.S. biotech firm Moderna, U.K. pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, and China’s Sinovac Biotech are some of the companies that have made the most progress towards developing vaccine candidates for the coronavirus.
