The news about the novel variant of the coronavirus continues to pour all over the media. Check out the latest reports.
Moderna CEO addresses Omicron covid variant
Fox Business notes that Stéphane Bancel, the CEO of Moderna, said in an interview published today that current vaccines for covid 19 will likely be much less effective against the new omicron variant.
“I think it’s going to be a material drop,” he told the Financial Times.
He continued and said the following:
“I just don’t know how much because we need to wait for the data.”
He told the paper that he does not believe there is a “world” where the effectiveness is the same level that vaccines had with the Delta variant.
He also made sure to explain the fact that he’s spoken to scientists who told him that this variant is “not going to be good.”
He also said it could be months before pharmaceutical companies can produce vaccines at scale to counter this new variant of the virus.
The Financial Times reported that a recent Stanford study found the Moderna jab 56.6% effective against infection from the Delta variant.
President Biden said the variant is a “cause for concern, not a cause for panic.”
Fauci’s statement about Omicron has people freaking out
CNBC just reported that covid symptoms linked to the new Omicron variant had been described as “extremely mild” by the South African doctor who first raised the alarm over the new strain.
Host Chuck Todd asked Fauci why this particular variant, which has been labeled a “Variant of Concern” by the WHO is causing concern when others, such as Lambda and Mu, didn’t.
“Well, right now, what we have is we have the window into the mutations that are in this new variant,” Fauci replied.
