It has been just revealed that the Japanese have made a massive discovery that could be able to grow people new teeth. Well, this is something that a lot would really appreciate.
New medical discovery in Japan
A team of Japanese scientists has developed a revolutionary drug that can stimulate the growth of new teeth. This is the first drug of its kind in the world.
Dr. Katsu Takahashi, lead researcher, co-founder of Toregem Biopharma, and head of dentistry and oral surgery at the Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital in Osaka, Japan, has dedicated his entire career to finding a way to induce the growth of new teeth.
In an article in The Mainichi, he said that the idea of growing new teeth is every dentist’s dream, and that he has been working on this since he was a graduate student.
He was confident that he would be able to make it happen, and he did.
In mammals, including humans, teeth are not continually replaced like in sharks and many reptiles. Until recently, it was believed that humans had only two sets of teeth. However, new evidence suggests that humans also possess tooth buds that can potentially become a third set of teeth.
The growth of these teeth buds can be stimulated by an antibody-based drug that targets a protein that inhibits their growth. In previous animal experiments, this drug-induced the growth of a “third generation” of teeth, in addition to baby teeth and permanent adult teeth.
The drug has been successfully used to grow new teeth in mice and ferrets, and clinical trials to test the drug’s safety in healthy adults are expected to begin in July 2024.
