According to the latest reports, it has been revealed that there is a popular arthritis supplement that brings huge health benefits. Check out the latest news below.
Popular arthritis supplement comes with huge benefits
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 655,000 lives annually.
Arthritis, the leading cause of work disability in the nation, affects around 54 million Americans, which is nearly one-quarter of all adults in the country.
However, a recent study suggests that a popular supplement could benefit both conditions simultaneously. Glucosamine and chondroitin, commonly used to alleviate the pain and inflammation of arthritis, can also help reduce the risk of heart disease and death from cardiovascular diseases. This promising research warrants a closer look.
Researchers at West Virginia University (WVU) conducted a study that involved more than 16,000 adults aged 40 and above. The study’s findings were published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine.
After accounting for age, sex, race, education, smoking status, and physical activity, the researchers made a striking discovery.
According to the study, individuals who took glucosamine and chondroitin supplements daily for one year reduced their risk of death from any cause by an astonishing 39 percent.
Additionally, the supplementation decreased deaths related to cardiovascular disease, such as coronary artery disease, stroke, and other heart conditions, by 65 percent.
In fact, the benefits of taking glucosamine and chondroitin were found to be similar to those of regular exercise in terms of reducing the risk of death, although the researchers do not recommend replacing exercise with supplementation.
The researchers became interested in the supplement after earlier studies involving participants with arthritis pain.
The research showed significant links between glucosamine/chondroitin intake and mortality.
In a 2019 study published in the British Medical Journal, researchers found that taking glucosamine/chondroitin for arthritis pain also significantly reduced the risk of heart disease and stroke.
The study showed that the supplement decreased the risk of adverse cardiovascular events by 15%, cardiovascular-related deaths by 22%, and coronary heart disease by 18%.
To further investigate this link between regular consumption of the supplement and mortality from cardiovascular conditions, researchers conducted a study at WVU.
