$ Kidney-Harming Habits And How To Avoid Them

There are a lot of habits that can harm our kidneys, but thankfully, there are also some protective ways that we can apply as well in order to maintain our health. Check them out below.

4 ways that we can harm our kidneys

1. Holding in urine
It’s not a strange thing for some people to hold in their urine for extended periods, especially due to work or other obligations. However, this habit can have harmful effects on the kidneys. When urine is held in the bladder for too long, it can cause the bladder to fill up and may even flow back into the kidneys, leading to kidney swelling or hydronephrosis. This can harm kidney function and in severe cases, cause kidney failure. Therefore, it is crucial to urinate promptly whenever there is a need to do so.
2. Using too much salt
Dipping food in ketchup or other processed condiments is a common way to enhance its flavor. However, these condiments have a high salt and additive content that places a heavy load on the kidneys. The best thing we can do is to reduce the consumption of salt and condiments by half, and instead, opt for natural sea salt with lower sodium content as a substitute for highly processed table salt.
3. Not drinking enough water and replacing it with coffee
It’s essential to drink enough water throughout the day, especially if you’re used to consuming coffee or other beverages. Dehydration can occur if you forget to drink water, which can lead to reduced urine output and hinder your body’s ability to remove toxins and waste, potentially causing kidney damage. If you notice that your urine is dark yellow or tea-colored, it’s a sign that you need to drink more water.

Some people only drink water when they feel thirsty, and when they do, they consume large amounts in a short period. This puts a lot of pressure on the kidneys, which can lead to kidney damage. It’s better to regularly replenish fluids throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. You’ll know you’re well-hydrated if your urine is a pale-yellow color.
4. Using sports drinks
Sports drinks are designed to replenish the body with lost electrolytes, minerals, vitamins, and salt after physical activity. It is important to note that consuming sports drinks without engaging in physical exercise can result in excessive salt intake, which can put extra strain on the kidneys. If you are in such a situation, it is recommended that you dilute the sports drink two to five times before drinking it.
