Intensive Ivermectin Use Yielded 74% Drop In Peru’s Excess Deaths

New ecological study

An ecological study, which underwent peer review, unequivocally demonstrated that ivermectin effectively reduced excess deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru. The study revealed that the government authorized the use of ivermectin, which led to a staggering 74 percent reduction in excess deaths in 10 states that used it most intensively.

The data also showed that ivermectin use during four months in 2020 was closely associated with fewer excess deaths across 25 states in Peru. The nationwide excess deaths decreased by fourteenfold when ivermectin was readily available. However, when access to ivermectin was restricted for two months, the excess deaths increased by thirteenfold.

These findings are entirely consistent with the World Health Organization’s summary data for the same time period in Peru.

Ivermectin is a cost-effective and well-known treatment for parasitic diseases. Some scientists believe that this drug can also attach itself to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, thereby reducing its morbidity and infectivity.

Prior to the implementation of COVID-19 vaccine mandates, Peru relied on mitigation strategies like lockdowns and therapeutics to control the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as did many other countries.

Approving the use of Ivermectin

On May 8, 2020, the Peruvian Ministry of Health approved the widespread use of ivermectin, leading 25 states in Peru to implement inpatient and outpatient treatments with this drug to varying degrees and timelines. Through the Mega-Operación Tayta (MOT), a national program led by Peru’s Ministry of Defense, the government of Peru started distributing ivermectin on a large scale.

In cooperation with 11 other government agencies, MOT made it their mission to cover all targeted regions with rapid response teams to swiftly detect COVID-19 cases, administer ivermectin, and provide food to encourage individuals to self-isolate for 15 days.

Additionally, MOT began distributing the therapeutic to all high-risk individuals, irrespective of their COVID-19 test results or symptoms.

The government of Peru diligently monitored daily COVID-19 deaths and all-cause deaths through various national health databases, enabling researchers to calculate excess deaths.

They also meticulously tracked data on deaths and other public health parameters, facilitating analysis of the potential efficacy of interventions, such as ivermectin, during the pandemic.

However, following the inauguration of President Francisco Sagasti on November 17, 2020, the government’s decision to stop distributing ivermectin and make it available only through prescription has made it significantly more challenging for people to access.

Researchers have observed changes in daily excess all-cause deaths across the country following the implementation of these restrictions.

The important effect of Ivermectin on excess deaths

During January and February 2020, we calculated the number of deaths from all causes and found that the monthly death rate fluctuated with an average of 5.2 percent and a standard deviation of 3.8 percent. By May of the same year, the number of deaths had more than doubled compared to the baseline from January and February.

We conducted a thorough analysis to determine the date of peak excess deaths for those aged 60 and over and to monitor the decline in excess deaths 30 and 45 days after the peak.

This analysis was carried out on a state-by-state basis during the first wave of the pandemic. We then categorized the 25 states based on the extent of ivermectin distribution: maximal, medium, and minimal.

The results show that in the 10 MOT states, there was a significant decrease in excess deaths after reaching the peak, with a 74 percent drop after 30 days and an 86 percent drop after 45 days. In the 14 states where ivermectin was locally administered, excess deaths dropped by 53 percent after 30 days and 70 percent after 45 days.
