A recent study suggests a direct link between high insulin levels and pancreatic cancer. High insulin levels are often found in individuals who suffer from type 2 diabetes and obesity, which are known risk factors for pancreatic cancer.
The study, conducted by the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada, sheds light on how insulin and its receptors contribute to the development of pancreatic cancer and how they are related to type 2 diabetes and obesity.
A recent study published in the journal Cell Metabolism has revealed that high levels of insulin can lead to the overstimulation of pancreatic acinar cells. These cells are responsible for creating, storing, and releasing digestive enzymes for breaking down high-fat foods.
The overstimulation can cause inflammation, eventually leading to the transformation of these cells into precancerous cells.
The study’s first author, Anni Zhang, explained that the research team found that high levels of insulin directly contribute to pancreatic cancer initiation through insulin receptors in acinar cells.
“The mechanism involves increased production of digestive enzymes, leading to heightened pancreatic inflammation,” she said in a statement.
Insulin has been found to play a significant role in enabling normal function of pancreatic acinar cells. However, when insulin levels are high, it can unintentionally promote pancreatic inflammation and the development of precancerous cells.
The research focused on the most common and aggressive form of pancreatic cancer, known as pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).
This cancer has a grim 5-year survival rate of less than 10 percent and is projected to rank as the second most prominent contributor to cancer-related deaths by 2030.
As the number of pancreatic cancer cases is increasing, it is imperative to understand the role of insulin in the development of PDAC.
