An anti-cancer compound in broccoli brings more benefits to human health
Researchers from the University of Sydney in Australia have discovered that a chemical naturally present in broccoli may help prevent blood clots, which can lead to strokes – the second leading cause of death globally.
The team conducted laboratory tests on 23 plant compounds to determine their ability to bond with platelets in the blood.
Platelets are essential for stopping bleeding by plugging up wounds, but they can also cause harmful clots that block blood flow in certain situations. In critical tissues like the brain and heart, even a brief loss of oxygen can lead to permanent damage.
Sulforaphane (SFN), a chemical commonly found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and broccoli sprouts, has been identified as a potential anticlotting agent.
This compound has already gained attention in the past for its potential to prevent cancer and lower cholesterol levels.
After conducting a thorough analysis of SFN’s impact at the molecular level, it was discovered that it has the ability to slow down the process of platelet clumping and prevent the formation of clots in our arteries.
This was apparently achieved by modifying the activity of a protein called PDIA6.
“Not only is the broccoli compound effective in improving the performance of clot-busting medication after a stroke, it could be used as a preventative agent for patients who are at a high risk of stroke,” says biomedical scientist Xuyu Liu from the University of Sydney.
The findings of the study suggest that SFN is a promising candidate to reduce the risk of stroke, particularly in groups that are most susceptible to it.
It is worth noting that SFN is found naturally in certain foods, such as broccoli, which is known to promote heart health and provide protection against diseases.
