The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in Beijing has released a guideline outlining China’s ambitions to develop humanoid robots.
The MIIT believes that humanoid robots have the potential to be a disruptive technology, similar to computers and smartphones, and could drastically transform the industrial sector and the way humans live.

The document states that China aims to be capable of mass-producing humanoid robots by 2025. To achieve this, the country intends to establish an innovation system dedicated to humanoid robots, make strides in key technologies, and ensure the safe and efficient supply of core components. By 2027, humanoids are expected to become a significant new driver of economic growth for China.
Leadership in China, as well as the Chinese robotics industry, is closely monitoring the progress of humanoid development around the world.
Most of the companies that have publicly announced a commercial humanoid robot to date are based in North America.
Agility Robotics, headquartered in Oregon, has recently announced that its Digit humanoid robot is undergoing testing by Amazon in an R&D warehouse near Seattle. Amazon is also an investor in Agility Robotics.
Furthermore, Agility Robotics has also announced the opening of a new humanoid manufacturing facility in Oregon. The facility is expected to be completed in 2024 and will be capable of producing 10,000 units per year.
The Robot Report’s RoboBusiness 2023, a top event for commercial robotics developers, hosted a keynote panel that discussed the current state of humanoids.
The panel included executives from three of the most advanced humanoid robot manufacturers.
They talked about the rapid advancement of humanoid robots and the potential business opportunities that come with them. Specifically, the panel outlined the applications where humanoid robots are most likely to be used, such as moving materials in warehouses and manufacturing plants.
According to the Chinese guidelines, robots are expected to play a significant role in healthcare, home services, agriculture, and logistics in the coming years.
The country is also investing in developing humanoids that can work in harsh environments and hazardous conditions, especially in the manufacturing sector.
To develop better humanoids, the industry is encouraged by the MIIT to leverage recent AI breakthroughs, like large language models, to focus on improving the brain, cerebellum, and limbs of humanoids.
