Scientists Finally Have an Explanation for the Huge Bubbles Expanding Outwards From the Milky Way Galaxy

If anybody believed that the Milky Way galaxy had revealed all of its secrets to humanity, they are so wrong! We’re not sure if that disappoints or delights them, but both scenarios are possible.

About two years ago, astronomers were baffled by seeing huge bubbles expanding outwards from the Milky Way galaxy, as the X-ray telescope eRosita revealed. Trying to uncover the origin of the phenomenon seemed useless, but astronomy frequently gets updated.

Blame it on the supermassive black hole

At the core of the Milky Way, there’s a supermassive black hole known as Sagittarius A. Contrary to the standard definition of black holes, this one also has a positive role.

Phys.org now reveals what a new study has found: Sagittarius A is to blame for the huge bubbles that were found extending from our galaxy, as the dark monster is generating a powerful jet of activity that lasted for 100,000 years. The two models explaining the bubbles are known as Fermi and eRosita bubbles.

U-M astronomer Mateusz Ruszkowski, who’s also a co-author of the study, explained as quoted by the publication mentioned earlier:

Our findings are important in the sense that we need to understand how black holes interact with the galaxies that they are inside, because this interaction allows these black holes to grow in a controlled fashion as opposed to [growing] uncontrollably,

If you believe in the model of these Fermi or eRosita bubbles as being driven by supermassive black holes, you can start answering these profound questions.

Since the Milky Way galaxy measures 100,000 light-years from one of its edges to the opposite one, we can be sure that astronomers will keep coming up with new discoveries that will leave us speechless!
