The oldest mushroom on Earth of 115 million years was discovered by researchers. With just five centimeters, experts say the fungus fell into a river in northeastern Brazil and was caught in a lagoon, covered with sediment.
The mushroom lived in the time when the dinosaurs dominated the dry and big birds on the skies, informs Mirror. The perfectly preserved remains have been discovered in northeastern Brazil, being an extremely rare fossil.
The discovery is extremely important because fungi have been an important part of life on land. The fungus, called the magnificent Gondwanagaricites, fell into a river and reached a high salinity lagoon. It sank into salty waters and was covered by fine sediments.
Dr. Sam Heads, of the University of Illinois, discovered the fungus while digitizing the fossils of the Crato Araripe basin. “Most mushrooms grow and disappear in a few days, the fact that it is so well preserved makes it a real wonder of science”, Heads said.
