Korea is another country interested in exploring the Moon. Last year in August, we shared the news about the Asian country launching its Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO), which is also known as Danuri.
An article from Sky&Telescope reported that SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket successfully transported South Korea’s orbiter into space. An impressive feat, the first stage booster of the Falcon 9 also returned to Earth after the launch, landing on a drone ship for potential reuse in future missions.
Danuri snaps black-and-white photos of the Moon and Earth
Just because they’re not in vibrant technicolor doesn’t mean black-and-white photos can’t be thrilling! In fact, their timeless, classic appearance adds a certain je ne sais quoi to any image. So don’t discount monochrome photography – it’s still got plenty of excitement to offer.
Danuri proves that by bringing black-and-white photos of the Moon and Earth:
According to the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), the images taken by the spacecraft between December 24 and January 1 offer a unique perspective, as they were captured from a distance of fewer than 120 kilometers (75 miles) above the lunar surface. These images provide a detailed look at both the lunar surface and Earth.
Astronomers are interested in exploring the Moon not just because of the breathtaking views of Earth from its surface (although that’s definitely a plus). Scientists are generally drawn to the Moon because it’s full of scientific mysteries just waiting to be solved! For example, there’s the question of how the Moon formed, the mystery of its “moonquakes,” and the conundrum of why its surface is covered in dust. And let’s not forget about the possibility of discovering new lunar life forms – how cool would that be?! All jokes aside, the Moon is a valuable object of study for astronomers because it can teach us more about the early history of the solar system and the forces that shaped it.
