James Webb Discovers the First Exoplanet, and It’s the Same Size as Earth

Who would have thought that just a few decades ago, astronomers were still in the dark about the existence of exoplanets? But now, it seems that these mysterious cosmic objects are popping up everywhere, like cosmic dandelions in the wind! So far, astronomers have discovered a whopping 5,000 exoplanets, and they’re still counting.

It’s like the universe is playing a cosmic game of hide and seek with us, and we’re finally starting to catch on. Who knows, maybe in the near future we’ll discover that exoplanets are as common as rocks in a gravel pit.

But James Webb Space Telescope has just found its first exoplanet, and that’s a reason for excitement!

LHS 475 b enters the cosmic scene

LHS 475 b is the name of the newfound exoplanet by Webb, and perhaps the most interesting part is that the object is almost the same size as our planet. It’s also not too far away from our planet – “only” 41 light-years away.

A group of scientists, spearheaded by Kevin Stevenson – a staff astronomer – and Jacob Lustig-Yaeger – a postdoctoral fellow – both of whom work at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, utilized the Webb telescope to make observations of the exoplanet in question.

Mark Clampin, who is the Astrophysics Division director at NASA, stated:

These first observational results from an Earth-sized, rocky planet open the door to many future possibilities for studying rocky planet atmospheres with Webb,

Webb is bringing us closer and closer to a new understanding of Earth-like worlds outside the Solar System, and the mission is only just getting started.

It’s amazing to think about all the possibilities that exoplanets could hold. Maybe one of them is home to a highly advanced alien civilization, or maybe another one has a breathable atmosphere and liquid water, making it a potential candidate for human colonization. The possibilities are truly endless and exciting.
