The International Space Station (ISS) is a habitable artificial satellite that orbits the Earth at an altitude of approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles). The ISS is the result of a collaboration between five space agencies: NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada).
The station was first launched in 1998 and has been continuously occupied by international astronaut crews since 2000. It is the largest human-made structure in space, measuring over 109 meters (357 feet) in length and weighing approximately 420,000 kilograms (925,000 pounds).
