The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume Wholesome Farms branded vanilla ice creams as they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
These are the 115-ml formats, with code 017032.
Central Smith Creamery, which distributes these ice cuts in Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba, voluntarily withdraws them from the market. The CFIA advises food service establishments, such as hospitals and nursing homes, not to use or use these cuts.
Food contaminated with listeriosis is not necessarily indicative of contamination or suspicious odor, but may cause high fever, nausea, and abdominal pain.
The bacteria, in severe cases, can cause death, but no illness associated with the consumption of these products has been reported in Canada.
Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable.
