Pigeon repellents and other effective solutions

Pigeon is one of the most common birds, and you will see them everywhere, whether you live in the city or on your farm. They are mostly found near town buildings, farmyards, feed mills, gardens, and bridges. They are brilliant and have a strong ambition to get back to the place which they love.

Pigeons can be pleasant to watch, but they can leave their droppings everywhere, which can cause several infections to public health by transmitting sixty transmittable diseases. It is very alarming, particularly in areas with children and abundance of pigeons. Their droppings are very acidic, which can significantly destroy the structure of the building material.

Different methods by which an individual can get rid of pigeons or discourage them from trying to land or roost on the ceiling or the windows in a house and buildings are available. A humane approach to get rid of pigeons from the residential area is however better and preferred.

The use of pigeon repellents is one of the effective methods to get rid of pigeons. Repellent is any disturbance or avoidance that causes pigeons to drive away from your area.

Following repellents are used to get rid of pigeons effectively:

  • Reflective scare tape

Reflective scare tape is the best way to keep pigeons away from any property because of their primary dependence on their eyesight. The double-sided roll of reflective tape having a reflection on both sides confuses and frightens the birds. It reflects light into their eyes and keeps them away from such sites. This tape can be cut to any length and hung at any place. In windy areas, it will reflect light all around, which will scare the pigeons to drive them away.

  • Use of electric shocks

Electrical shock deterrents depend on pigeons sitting on an electrically powered surface or line, producing a nasty but non-lethal shock to the pigeons. It hurts and scares the pigeons and drives them away as soon as they touch the surface. Electric shocks are by far the most effective and powerful methods available, but they are expensive.

  • Use of bird spikes to deter pigeons

Bird spikes are tiny with sharp tips. The better ones are made of stainless steel, lasting many years, while the cheaper ones are made of plastic, lasting a few years. It is challenging for pigeons to see them from a far distance. And when the pigeons attempt to land on these spikes, they either hit their feet or their bodies, which is very painful for pigeons and will stop pigeons from coming again. This approach is 100% humane, and the pigeons will never really land on the spikes to get harmed.

  • Olfactory repellents

Fluids that consist of predatory urine or other liquids that smell or possibly taste unpleasant are also used as a repellent to get rid of pigeons. These fluids must be renewed at regular intervals of time to maintain their performance.

  • Ultrasonic repellents

Noise has been recognized to scare pigeons and other birds for a long time. Ultrasonic sounds are described as sounds that surpass the human ear’s ability to detect them, and it is mostly 20 kHz and above. Rippling ultrasonic noise, which varies in pitch, has a significant tendency to irritate the pigeons, due to which they want to drive away from such irritating and terrifying sound. Pigeons and other birds are frightened by hearing such sounds because they think that a predator is coming for them, due to which they will try to escape from such places.

  • Repellent sprays

Many bird-repellent sprays are now feasible to make at home; the most common one is cinnamon, black pepper, chili peppers, and vinegar. To make this spray, you can crush the dried red or green chili peppers and black pepper into a mixture of water and vinegar. After this, you can spray around those places where pigeons are abundant such as window frames, gardens, railings, roofs, etc., to make pigeons feel uncomfortable and get rid of them.

  • Gel barrier to deter pigeons

Gels cause an irritating and sticky sensation to pigeons as they land on them. It is very uncomfortable for pigeons, due to which they leave that area very quickly. It is one of the cheapest of all physical contact techniques, and it usually lasts for around 3 to 4 months; it also depends on the weather and the temperature, and after three months, it must be reapplied for better results.

Other Solutions: Pigeon Birth Control

Contraceptives like OvoControl P are very common and handy in keeping the pigeon population under control. The food additive does not allow the eggs to hatch and effectively reduces the population over time. Although it takes time to show effect, yet it is a long-term solution.
