It’s been just reported the fact that the European Parliament is urging the UK to release Julian Assange from prison. This is the final legal battle that the journalist is faced with. Check out the latest reports about what’s probably the most important fight for democracy and free journalism.
European Parliament urges UK to release Assange
The British High Court in London started Julian Assange’s possible final hearing on Tuesday morning. Assange is challenging his extradition to the U.S. where he faces charges for publishing classified U.S. military documents.
The European Parliament joins the growing number of voices calling on the U.K. to halt Assange’s extradition and release him from custody. This week, Assange will have his possible final appeal before two judges to block his extradition.
However, if he wins this week, a full appeal hearing could still happen in the future. In case Assange is extradited to the U.S. after exhausting all his legal appeals, he would face trial in Alexandria, Virginia. He could be sentenced to up to 175 years in an American maximum-security prison.

Supporters in London, Washington, D.C., and cities around the world are now holding rallies on Tuesday calling for Assange’s freedom.
In a letter Monday, 46 members of the European Parliament called on U.K. Home Secretary James Cleverly to “ensure the protection and safety of Julian Assange, to release him from the prison, and to prevent his extradition,” emphasizing that the freedom of the press and the public’s right to be informed is at stake.
