Curcumin, Active Substance In Turmeric, Might Fight Against The Metastasis Of Cancer

A team of researchers at the University of Chile has developed a nanoemulsion based on curcumin that prevents the recurrence and metastasis of cancer. Curcumin is the active substance in turmeric, so the new study suggests that consuming this food might be useful in fighting against cancer.

The developed nanoemulsion based on curcumin reached its target in 100% of the animals treated in the laboratory with just one dose, while 70% of those who did not receive it again had manifestations of cancer, the scientists stressed.

“One of the most important advantages of this formula is that it allows taking advantage of the anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties of this substance [curcumin], which are not achieved adequately through the simple consumption of turmeric due to its insolubility in water, mala, sorption and instability,” said Felipe Oyarzun, one of the researchers.

The researchers used curcumin by correcting and promoting its therapeutic effect, which allowed a prolonged protection of the substance once it is administered in animal patients.

Another breakthrough of this study has been the confirmation of the safety of the formula when applied in doses higher than those required to prevent the recurrence and metastasis of cancer.

“In one clinical trial, a tumor removed for treatment was given a dose 25 times higher than the initial dose and we evaluated if there was any indication of toxicity, if biochemical parameters in the blood or blood gas parameters were changed, and there was no effect,” noted Oyarzun.

In other words, he pointed out that the formula, even in much higher doses, is safe, which opens up the possibility of administering high doses in more complex and advanced stages of the disease.

“Generating a possible solution to cancer metastasis is a tremendous contribution that shows how in our country we are capable of contributing to a disease that afflicts people all over the world,” said Constanza Cea, another scientist who participated in the study.

Because this formulation can be transformed into powder and administered mixed with water, it is simple to carry an affordable. The work of the Chilean scientists is part of a larger study that tries to come up with reliable alternative therapies for cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
