Yesterday, the FDA approved the world’s first contact lenses that contain a special material which shades automatically when the surrounding light is bright. This new medical innovation is called Acuvue Oasys Contact Lenses and incorporates a new patented technology known as Transitions Light Intelligent Technology.
These contact lenses are designed only for people who are nearsighted or farsighted
The automatically shading contact lenses are recommended to be used on a daily basis to correct vision impairments in those people who are nearsighted or farsighted.
“This contact lens is the first of its kind to incorporate the same technology that is used in eyeglasses that automatically darken in the sun,” explained the director of the FDA’s Ophthalmic, Ear, Nose, and Throat Devices department, Malvina Eydelman.
These innovative contact lenses possess a photochromic substance added to their structure. This photochromic substance is capable of an automatic adjustment of the UV light by filtering it before reaching the eyes.
The FDA has thoroughly analyzed the auto-darkening contact lenses before approving the product
To approve this new device, the FDA reexamined analytical proof including a study that was conducted on 24 participants and investigated the driving performance of the contact lenses during daylight and during darkness.
This particular study concluded that the contact lenses are not an issue of concern as they weren’t endangering drivers who wore them.
However, the FDA recommends patient not to sleep with the contact lenses on and that these automatically shading contact lenses are not a suitable substitute for the sunglasses with a higher UV protection.
In conclusion, the innovative Acuvue Oasys Contact Lenses which incorporates the Transitions Light Intelligent Technology have been approved by the FDA and are the first automatically shading contact lenses thanks to a photochromic substance that’s capable to automatically adjust and filter the UV light.
