Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Become More Often in Californian City

Unfortunately, the issue of STIs (sexually transmitted infections) is not enough debated in our society. Encouraging sexual liberty is a pretty sensitive topic, but we must say that it often leads to terrible outcomes. There are a lot of sexually transmitted diseases out there, and some of them will even be lethal.

According to abc7.com, there’s an increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the Californian city of Long Beach. In less than two weeks, the city will be hosting an AIDS walk to raise funds so that free testing for specific diseases can be offered.

Massive increase in syphilis cases

Emily Johnson, who is an HIV and STI surveillance program specialist, confirmed by saying, as quoted by abc7.com:

We saw in 2019, increases of syphilis and high but stable rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Between 2015 and 2019, the cases of congenital syphilis in Long Beach skyrocketed by over 600%. The cases of chlamydia infections increased only by 12%, while gonorrhea infections went up by 59%.

Johnson reveals that women of color have to deal with syphilis recently. The specialist declared, as also quoted by abc7.com:

From what we hear from our patients when we interview them, there’s a lack of healthcare access around these women in the community. There’s a lack of transportation, people may not be able to take time off of work and there’s also a history of medical mistrust, which I think is our job as health care providers to kind of tackle those barriers.

RareDiseases.org tells us more about congenital syphilis. A spirochete is what’s causing it as long as it’s acquired by the fetus in the uterus. Symptoms of the disease may even need years to appear, but they can also occur a few weeks after the child’s birth.
