People Consuming Omega-3s Will Have a Healthier Brain

Taking care of our brain’s health, similar to how we pay attention to the rest of the body, is crucial. Unfortunately, many people forget this lesson, but there are plenty of studies out there emphasizing the importance of not neglecting our mental health.

In the new research involving over 2,000 participants, scientists from UT San Antonio have analyzed the connection between concentrations of red blood cell omega-3 fatty acid and cognitive signs of brain aging. As a result, they are now encouraging the addition of more omega-3 fatty acids through supplements or food as a way to keep the brain healthy over the years, as Yahoo Life reveals.

Middle-aged adults can benefit

The recipe presented above was associated with improved cognition in the case of middle-aged adults. Therefore, if you’re in your ’40s or ’50s, you should consider applying the omega-3 treatment! It could even be more beneficial if you include more omega-3 in your diet if you’re younger.

The researchers concluded that a higher concentration of omega-3 is associated with having a larger hippocampus, meaning the portion of the brain that plays an important role when it comes to memorizing.

Claudia Satizabal, Ph.D., an assistant professor of population health sciences, explained for NeuroscienceNews.com:

Studies have looked at this association in older populations. The new contribution here is that, even at younger ages, if you have a diet that includes some omega-3 fatty acids, you are already protecting your brain for most of the indicators of brain aging that we see at middle age.

The scientist also said, as the same source quotes:

We saw the worst outcomes in the people who had the lowest consumption of omega-3s,

So, that is something interesting. Although the more omega-3, the more benefits for the brain, you just need to eat some to see benefits.

The new study was published in Neurology.
