Singularity to happen by 2031?
According to one expert, “the singularity,” which basically means the moment when artificial intelligence surpasses human control, could happen within the next few years. This timeline is much shorter than current predictions and it’s not certain that AI will dominate in the first place.
Ben Goertzel, CEO of SingularityNET and a Ph.D. holder from Temple University, predicts that artificial general intelligence (AGI), which refers to AI that can perform tasks as well as humans, is only three to eight years away. Once AGI is achieved, the singularity may soon follow.
The AI industry is showing no signs of slowing down, despite skepticism from some. Companies like Meta and OpenAI, as well as Elon Musk’s xAI project, are working hard to develop more advanced artificial intelligence models, with a particular focus on AGI.
“These systems have greatly increased the enthusiasm of the world for AGI,” Goertzel told Decrypt, “so you’ll have more resources, both money and just human energy—more smart young people want to plunge into work and working on AGI.”
The concept of AI originated in the 1950s, driven primarily by the United States military as a potential national defense tool. However, recent progress in the field has been propelled by various drivers with different motives.
Nowadays, companies are driven by the motive of making money, while artists or musicians use AI to explore creative possibilities.
Achieving the singularity is something that will need a significant leap from the current point of AI development. Today’s AI is designed for specific tasks, and the push towards AGI aims to give the technology a more human-like understanding of the world and expand its capabilities.
As AI continues to evolve, it moves steadily closer to AGI, which some believe is only a step away from the singularity.
Popular Mechanics writes that “the technology isn’t there yet, and some experts caution we are truly a lot further from it than we think—if we get there at all. But the quest is underway regardless.”
Musk, for example, created xAI in the summer of 2023 and just recently launched the chatbot Grok to “assist humanity in its quest for understanding and knowledge,” according to Reuters. Musk also called AI “the most disruptive force in history.”
