CDC issues alert about potentially deadly outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a food safety alert on Tuesday regarding a bacterial outbreak that has spread across seven states.
The CDC reported that whole peaches, nectarines, and plums sold by HMC Farms or Signature Farms were recalled due to 11 confirmed illnesses, 10 hospitalizations, and one death in connection with the listeria outbreak. The affected products were sold between May 1 and Nov. 15 in 2022 and 2023.
The CDC is investigating to determine whether any other fruit or products made with this fruit may also be contaminated.
HMC Farms, based in Kingsburg, California, announced the recall last week in a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA discovered listeria in a sample it had tested in late October.
“Although the recalled fruit is no longer available in retail stores, consumers may have frozen the recalled fruit at home for later use. Consumers are urged to check their freezers for the recalled fruit, not consume it, and discard it,” the FDA said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people who have purchased recalled fruit should dispose of it immediately and thoroughly clean all containers and surfaces that may have come into contact with the fruit, such as the interior of a refrigerator.
As of November 17, cases of illness were reported in seven states: California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, and Ohio. The CDC reported one death in California, and another woman became sick during pregnancy and had a preterm delivery.
The agency warns that Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium that causes listeria, is particularly harmful to pregnant women, those over 65 years old, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The CDC also warns that listeria can spread beyond the lower intestine to other parts of the body, leading to a severe condition known as invasive listeriosis.
Pregnant women who contract listeria are at risk of pregnancy loss, life-threatening illness, or preterm delivery.
