Covering an area of 6.7 million square kilometers, the Amazon rainforest is incredibly huge. It also consists of extraordinary biodiversity. But even so, you know what they say that nothing lasts forever, and it may apply to the famous tropical rainforest as well.
The Amazon rainforest is only five years away from becoming a dry savannah if humanity won’t find a way to save it. Or at least that’s what Luciana Gatti claims, who’s a senior researcher in climate change at the Brazilian National Institute of Space Research, according to a new article posted on NewScientist.
It’s an emergency
There’s no wonder why Gatti considers the situation of the Amazon rainforest as an emergency. If the place will indeed become a wasteland, it would be terrible for our beloved Earth. The rainforest stores vast amounts of carbon which would contribute even more to global warming if it gets released into the atmosphere.
Gatti declared, as quoted by NewScientist:
We are about to collapse,
We are in an emergency, we need action now.
It’s a nightmare.
We can all realize that five years means plenty of time for a lot of events to occur. It also means enough time for humanity to come with glorious ideas or catastrophic ones. However, teamwork will be another important part in saving the Amazon rainforest if it happens. But not just any teamwork will do.

There is a narrow window of opportunity to change this trajectory. But action must be exponential.
