Abelisaurus Dinosaur Fossils Unearthed in Morocco Confirms the Chicxulub Impact Theory

There were numerous species of dinosaurs roaming across the surface of the Earth, and while everybody has heard about the terrifying Tyrannosaurus rex, we can’t say the same about the Abelisaurus. The former is a species of dinosaur measuring from 6.5 to 7.9 meters in length and having a mass of up to 3,000 kilograms.

Abelisaurus is also a genus of predatory abelisaurid theropod dinosaur that was alive during the Late Cretaceous Period of the current territory of South America. The species is known to have lived 85.5 million to 70.6 million years ago.

A new Abelisaurus fossil was found near Casablanca

According to MoroccoWorldNews.com, new Abelisaurus fossils were discovered in Morocco and near the city of Casablanca. Researchers believe that the discovery confirms the widespread theory that dinosaurs went extinct because of a giant asteroid colliding with Earth roughly 60 million years ago.

Interestingly enough, some researchers have proposed other theories over the years to explain the mass extinction of our giant and terrifying friends, the dinos. As it usually happens, not all of them agree with the most popular theory. Some researchers blame it on volcanic activity, climate change, disease, and more.

The new discovery of the Abelisaurus fossils proves that African dinosaurs were a diverse species throughout their entire existence. The discovery also confirms that the demise of these dinosaurs occurred suddenly, indicating the hypothesis of a giant impact with an asteroid.

What if, on the other hand, dinosaurs never went extinct? Such a hypothetical scenario would have surely led to some pretty interesting turn of events. For instance, a dinosaur-human coexistence might have dominated the Earth. Also, perhaps dinosaurs might have been able to develop high levels of intelligence similar to humans and build a dino civilization.
