The World’s First Case Of Super-Gonorrhea Has Been Registered In The UK And Its Resistant To Antibiotics

A Briton has contracted what doctors call “the worst super-gonorrhea case” in the world. Even more, this is the first gonorrhea case that is not responding to antibiotics treatment, which is the usual treatment for gonorrhea cases.

It’s a world first, and Britain’s public health ministry would have gone well. The authorities have indeed registered the “worst case of super-gonorrhea in the world”. This sexually transmitted disease, which is caused by a bacteria, was contracted in South-East Asia by a Briton whose age and identity was not revealed, could not be cured with the combination of antibiotics usually used.

The combination of azithromycin and ceftriaxone had no effect in this case of gonorrhea infection and, even more, this world’s premier has even been confirmed by the World’s Health Organization (WHO).

Gonorrhea resistant to antibiotics is not a rare occurrence, though

A few months ago, the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the percentage of gonorrhea that did not respond to azithromycin alone had increased significantly.

But, as Dr. Gwenda Hughes of the British Ministry of Public Health points out, “this is the first time that a case of gonorrhea has such a high resistance to two drugs and most other common antibiotics used.”

More antibiotics are still tested for effectiveness in the “worst case of super-gonorrhea in the world”

A more thorough analysis of the Briton’s gonorrhea infection suggests that another antibiotic could work. Now, the doctors are currently treating the patient with that “last-resort” antibiotic but will have to wait for a few weeks to observe if the antibiotic is working or not.

If left untreated, gonorrhea can cause testicular and prostate infection. In women, it can cause infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and infertility.

This worst case of super-gonorrhea in the world proves, once again, that antibiotic-resistant bacteria will be soon a much bigger issue for the humans’ health than the specialists expected.
