People in Afghanistan had to deal with an earthquake jolting the eastern part of their country on Wednesday morning at 1.30 local time. Unfortunately, a minimum of 920 people lost their lives because of the event, about 600 were injured, and dozens of houses were destroyed, as a new article via msn.com reveals.
The earthquake hit Paktika, which is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan. It also occurred about 27 miles away from the city of Khost, meaning the largest city in the southeastern part of Afghanistan. Residents even had to deal with landslides as a result of the jolt.
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake
The earthquake in question reached a 6.1 magnitude. Usually, earthquakes reaching at least a magnitude of 6 are concerning.
Bilal Karimi, who’s a deputy spokesman for the Taliban government, asked for help. He fears that the situation can get even worse. Karimi said in a tweet, as msn.com quotes:
A severe earthquake shook four districts of Paktika province, killing and injuring hundreds of our countrymen and destroying dozens of houses,
We urge all aid agencies to send teams to the area immediately to prevent further catastrophe.
The earthquake represents the deadliest one in decades that occurred in the Asian country.
Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid, said as CNN quotes:
Measures were also taken to provide cash assistance and treatment.
He also added, as the same source quotes, that agencies were “instructed to use air and land transport for the delivery of food, clothing, medicine and other necessities and for the transportation of the wounded.”
Unfortunately, the people of Afghanistan were not the only ones who felt the recent earthquake. Some degree of the tremors related to the jolt was also felt over an area covering 300 miles and including parts of India and Pakistan as well.
