How to Choose the Right Dog for Your House

Choosing the right dog for your household can be quite challenging, especially if you’ve never had a pet before. The old saying “dogs are men’s best friends” is completely true, although there are plenty of exceptions out there. These animals can turn out to be quite a nuisance if you don’t give them enough attention, food, shelter, and care for their well-being.

I’ve had a dog in the house for five years, which means that I have plenty of knowledge to share with you on how to choose the right dog. First of all, you need to keep in mind that each dog is different when it comes to energy levels and behavior. It’s best to get yourself a dog when it is still a puppy, as, in this way, you have the best chance to make the animal devoted enough to you.

Take your lifestyle into account

You don’t only have to be careful how the dog is. You also need to take your own lifestyle into account, as perhaps you won’t be willing and have the energy to play with your future pet as much as it wants it. If that happens, your animal might become depressed.

There’s no secret that different dog breeds have different exercise and attention demands. In other words, you need to seriously consider your work schedule, daily routine, and activity level. You have to know exactly how much time you will be able to dedicate to training, grooming, and exercising a dog.

Size matters

If you’ve been told that size doesn’t matter, well, that’s not true in our case. Size does matter, meaning that you have to consider the size of your own living space. While large and active dog breeds might not be suitable for small apartments, you could consider smaller breeds instead. In other words, some dog breeds have way more energy than you can handle, as they can even damage your furniture and computer when you’re not at home. You can’t blame them for doing so, either, as a dog might not realize how important all that stuff is for you.

Allergies

There are people out there who are allergic to dogs. In other words, they will develop some pretty nasty symptoms if they come into contact with a dog, such as runny/stuffy nose, asthma, difficulty breathing, and more. This means that it would clearly be a bad idea to bring a dog into the house if you have family members who are allergic to these animals. Those allergies can manifest, especially if the dog leaves parts of its fur around the house.

Health considerations

Some dog breeds are prone to certain health issues. In case you didn’t know already, dogs can suffer from diseases as well, just like us. In other words, if your dog is prone to certain health conditions, regular veterinary care might be required. Therefore, it’s important to know exactly what the health considerations of your dog are before deciding to have such a pet.

Meet the dog

It’s very important to meet the dog that you are considering keeping in your house in order to see if it likes you or not. You should also observe the animal’s behavior and how it reacts to you and your family members. Just as we humans don’t often like each other, well, it’s the same when it comes to animals’ feelings towards us; some of them might just not like us.

There’s no denying that dogs can be wonderful creatures in people’s lives. Perhaps it’s better to consider adopting one from a shelter or rescue organization. There are numerous dogs of mixes and breeds that need a loving home.
