After the last time we spoke about the pros and cons of having a dog in the household, it’s time to focus on another one of the most popular pets out there: cats. Those wonderful felines can be very delightful companions, even though they require a lot of attention and care from us as owners.
Statistics show that in the UK alone, there are roughly 12.5 million pet cats, as 29% of all households have at least a cat. But regardless of how cute cats may be and how much we love them, we have to admit that they also pose some possible challenges for you as their owner.
Pros:
Cats are able to offer affectionate companionship. Although these majestic creatures have a reputation for being more distant and individualistic, many of them are affectionate and enjoy cuddling with their human owners. A lot of people who live alone appreciate and enjoy the presence of cats due to their purrs and gentle nuzzles. Furthermore, cats can also help you get rid of stress and anxiety due to their calming presence.
Let’s also not forget that compared to dogs, cats are relatively low-maintenance pets. These wonderful creatures don’t require daily walks; they use a litter box for elimination, and they also groom themselves.
Cats can also act as predators for insects, mice, and other pests that you may have in your house. In other words, having a cat in the house can keep those critters at bay and reduce the need for chemical pesticides.
Last but not least, cats also have entertainment value, as they can make us laugh out loud due to their nature. They love to chase laser pointers, battle around toys, climb on objects and furniture, and more. They will also occasionally break something, but hey, you cannot have them all in life!
Cons:
A lot of people are allergic to cats, as the presence of these animals can cause them symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and congestion. Therefore, it obviously wouldn’t be a good idea to bring a cat in the house if one of your family members has allergies.
Cats also have a natural instinct to scratch surfaces to mark their territory and sharpen their claws. Therefore, it would be a good idea to train that cat if you don’t want to see carpets, furniture, and other household items damaged.
Maintenance for that litter box is also a “must” if you have a cat in the house, as those animals are very fastidious. Therefore, in order to prevent odors and maintain a hygenic environment, it’s mandatory to regularly clean and scoop.
Like many other animals, cats will also shed hair around the house, especially during seasonal changes. Long-haired breeds may need regular grooming to prevent tangles and mats, while cat hair can accumulate on clothing and furniture.
We cannot say about cats that they seek out constant attention or affection as dogs do, as the former creatures value solitude more.
The decision to bring a cat into the house depends on each and every person’s lifestyle, preferences, and ability to provide attention and care to a pet. You need to carefully consider the pros and cons.
