Consuming Too Much Food of This Kind Can Lead to a Sudden Heart Attack

We’re assuming that everybody knows by now that it’s generally bad for your health to eat too much food. But such behaviour regarding your meals can even be more dangerous than most of us thought possible.

CNN announces that those who consume too much Southern American food, such as sausage gravy, fried chicken, buttered biscuits, and so on, are at high risk of suffering a sudden heart attack. A new study has found that consuming a steady diet of traditional Southern food can make a person 46% more likely to pass away after the heart suddenly stops.

Traditional Mediterranean-style diet could be beneficial

The new study also looked at the impact of consuming Mediterranean diets regarding the risk of sudden fatal heart failure. They concluded that in the case of those who are most closely following such meals, there’s a 26% lower cardiac death risk than for those who rarely choose such a menu.

James Shikany, who is the lead author of the study and also a professor of medicine and associate director for research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, declared as cited by CNN:

Improving one’s diet — by eating a diet abundant in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish such as the Mediterranean diet — and low in fried foods, organ meats and processed meats, characteristics of the Southern-style dietary pattern, may decrease one’s risk for sudden cardiac death.

The scientists examined data belonging to 21,000 people, and more than half of those people were from an area of 11 states in the Southeast part of the US, where strokes are happening pretty often: North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, and more.

The new study was published in the American Heart Association.
