Natural Immunity Is Not as Efficient as Immunity Acquired from Immunization

The Delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus originated in India last year, and since then, it has spread globally. The WHO has identified the strain in more than 124 countries, and the mutated variant continues to create a surge in the number of new daily cases. Not all vaccinations campaign are going at a fast pace. In some countries, some people do not wish to get vaccinated against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, while in others, there are not enough doses for essential workers. Health experts are warning that those who suffered a SARS-CoV-2 infection are not safe forever and can easily get reinfected. 

Natural immunization is not as effective as people think

The CDC published a new article in which health experts urge people to get any available Covid-19 vaccine, even if they went through the disease in the past. The study explains that there are not enough studies worldwide to show the effectiveness of vaccination for people who were previously infected with the coronavirus. However, laboratory tests show that the antibody response is better after vaccination than from natural immunization alone.

For the study, the data available on Kentucky residents were analyzed. Unvaccinated people who were previously infected has 2.34 times the odds of reinfection compared to those fully vaccinates. This means that Covid-19 vaccines provide and additional protections against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Health experts believe that natural immunization alone is not as effective against highly contagious variants, such as the Delta strain. Because the SARS-CoV-2 virus travels from one host to another and mutates so many times, it may evolve too much. The immune system of those previously infected might not recognize the mutated virus and, thus, might not create antibodies.
