Although even from the start of the ongoing pandemic, the COVID-19 disease was known to be less effective for young people, not everybody is that optimistic. Dr. Rochelle Walensky, who is director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), could be considered one of them.
Walensky recently urged teens to get vaccinated for COVID as she got worried because of an increase in the young ones being hospitalized for catching the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The information comes from the New York Post, and Walensky’s plea comes amid a report by the CDC, which revealed that the rate of hospitalizations related to the coronavirus among young people of ages between 12 and 17 years old surged between March and April.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky declared:
I am deeply concerned by the numbers of hospitalized adolescents and saddened to see the number of adolescents who required treatment in intensive care units or mechanical ventilation.
The data showed that from 204 teens who got hospitalized mainly for COVID infections between January 1 and March 31, a third of them required treatment in intensive care units, while five percent needed mechanical ventilation. Although hospitalizations for serious COVID infections occur more often in older adults, all the other age groups are not totally excluded from hospital admission.
According to Our World in Data, over 41% of Americans got fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Experts such as Anthony Fauci claim that a minimum of 70% of the population needs to be vaccinated for the coronavirus in order to reach herd immunity.
