European countries are reporting more and more infections every day, as the old continent seems to be under COVID siege. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has marked countries such as the UK, Germany, Albania, Armenia, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Norway, Ukraine, and others as “Level 4: COVID-19 Very High”. This means that the government agency says that traveling to these countries unvaccinated for the coronavirus is dangerous.
Surely everyone wonders why Europe is dealing with such a massive spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. According to The Guardian, the CEO of AstraZeneca, Mr. Pascal Soriot, says that the refusal of its vaccine has something to do with the situation.
Differences in T-cell immunity are compelling enough
While speaking for BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Soriot invokes the differences in T-cell immunity between the vaccines as an indicator that those who got immunity that lasted long against the coronavirus are the same individuals who got vaccinated with the AstraZeneca jab.
Mr. Soriot declared as quoted by The Guardian:
It’s really interesting when you look at the UK. There was a big peak of infections but not so many hospitalisations relative to Europe. In the UK [the Oxford/AstraZeneca] vaccine was used to vaccinate older people whereas in Europe people thought initially the vaccine doesn’t work in older people.
He also continued by saying, as quoted by the same source:
What I’m saying is that T-cells do matter and in particular it relates to the durability of the response, especially in older people, and this vaccine has been shown to stimulate T-cells to a higher degree in older people. There’s no proof of anything … we don’t know. But we need more data to analyse this and get the answer.
