The new Omicron covid variant continues to make headlines all over the world, even though experts are noting that the symptomatology is not something that we should be freaking out about.
The other day, we revealed that CNBC just reported that covid symptoms linked to the new Omicron variant had been described as “extremely mild” by the South African doctor who first raised the alarm over the new strain.
Dr. Angelique Coetzee, chair of the South African Medical Association, told the BBC recently that she started to see patients around Nov.18 presenting with “unusual symptoms” that differed slightly from those associated with the Delta variant.
But it’s vital to note that these symptoms are mild and they should not be a cause for despair.
CDC drops new booster recommendations
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday strengthened its recommendations on who should get boosters.
The LA Times just noted that the CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said that all vaccinated adults should get a booster.
It’s also important to mention the fact that this should be happening as long as they received their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna shot at least six months ago or they received their Johnson & Johnson shot at least two months ago.
“The recent emergence of the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) further emphasizes the importance of vaccination, boosters, and prevention efforts needed to protect against COVID-19.”
This is what Walensky said.
“Early data from South Africa suggest increased transmissibility of the Omicron variant.”
The same online publication mentioned above notes that the CDC‘s previous guidelines, last updated Nov. 19, recommended booster shots for adults 50 and older.
More than that, the notes also said that all younger, healthier adults age 18 to 49 are now eligible for booster shots but stopped short of recommending them.
A lot of people have been saying that the Delta infections are a pandemic of the unvaccinated, but experts made sure to highlight the fact that vaccinated people can also transmit covid because their immunity is waning.
