Baby Food Allergy Could Result in Asthma and Reduced Lung Function Later On, Study Finds

According to a study that was conducted by the Murdoch Children’s Study Institute (MCRI) in Australia, having a food allergy as a baby is associated with an increased risk of developing asthma and a decreased ability to function in the lungs later in childhood. This is unquestionably something that is a great deal unfortunate.

Can Food Allergies Be a Trigger to More Serious Conditions?

The researchers came to the conclusion that an early-life allergy to food was connected with an increased chance of developing asthma as well as a slower rate of lung expansion by the age of six. The method of gathering such data involved meticulous labor, and the outcomes demonstrated that the effort had been more than justified.

In the study, there were a total of 5,276 babies aged one year old from Melbourne, Australia. They were given a skin prick test for four different food allergies, including egg, sesame, peanuts, and either cow’s milk or shrimp.

In addition to this, the study found that children who had a food allergy had an increased risk of having impaired lung function. According to Rachel Peters, an affiliated professor at MCRI, we understand the following:

[…] Children who have food allergies might be shorter and lighter in comparison to their counterparts who do not have an allergy. This difference in height and weight can have a negative impact on a child’s lung development.

According to the findings of the study, 13.7 percent of those surveyed had already been diagnosed with asthma by the age of six. In comparison to children who did not suffer from food allergies, infants who did have allergic reactions to foods had approximately a fourfold increased risk of developing asthma by the age of six. In contrast to children who had overcome their allergy by the age of six, those who had not yet reached that milestone had the most significant harm.

If you are concerned about your child’s health in any way, it is imperative that you seek professional medical assistance. This way, you will have complete support during treatment and care!
