Recent Solar Storm is a Threat for GPS Systems and Flights

Remember how we were saying that our Sun can switch from the friendly and life-sustaining star to a huge and merciless foe? The temperatures present anywhere near the Sun are much more than a human being is able to withstand. Therefore, once the Sun unleashes its fury, saying your prayers is the wisest thing that you can do.

According to Express.co.uk, a powerful solar storm has hit the Earth, causing many to be on the lookout. Furthermore, an agency has warned about possible interferings with radio signals, power grids, and even satellites.

CMEs released by the Sun

Our star has been firing coronal mass ejections (CMEs) towards the Earth in the current week, meaning a major release of plasma. On Thursday, a stronger than n usual CME was launched by the Sun.

The SWPC, which is part of the NOAA, raised the alarm about the latter CME. In a statement cited by Express.co.uk, the storm could trigger “voltage irregularities possible in the electric power grid, false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices” and “intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems”.

A forecast coming from SWPC reveals, as quoted by the same source:

“G1 storm levels continue to be met and solar wind conditions remain elevated and enhanced, maintaining the potential for additional periods of G2-G3 level storms.”

On October 28, meaning just in time for Halloween, our Sun unleashed a solar flare of X1-class type. This means it’s the most powerful kind of solar flare. NASA has also confirmed that the cosmic event could be considered a major solar flare.
