Man Gets Hospitalized After Vitamin D Overdose

Perhaps anybody knows a few of the benefits of having enough vitamin D in your body: regulating the calcium and phosphate doses, which leads to keeping muscles, bones, and teeth healthy. While having a lack of vitamin D in your body is not a winning move at all, it might come as a surprise to you that having too much of it is also bad.

A new case that Insider speaks about proves it. A man overdosed on vitamin D by taking over 80 times more than the recommended amount. As a result, he has been dealing with weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, risk of kidney damage, and other unpleasant symptoms. The man had to spend eight days in the hospital.

Three months of pain

The name of the man in question wasn’t revealed. He had been through some weight loss as well due to his overdose0, losing over 12 kilograms in three months.

The “brilliant” idea of taking so much Vitamin D belongs to a private nutritionist from the UK, who recommended such a regimen. It was thanks to a blood test that it was found that the Vitamin D and calcium levels in the man’s blood were too high.

Vitamin D is also produced naturally by our bodies while undergoing exposure to sunlight. But of course, it’s not being produced in “exaggerated” amounts. That’s why it’s important for us to spend enough time outdoors.

However, an older study reveals that the guidelines for sunlight exposure to generate Vitamin D might need to be updated.

The patient who makes the subject of this article is presumably fine now, considering that he has been discharged from the hospital. However, doctors still prescribed him some medications to take at home – bisphosphonates and antisickness drugs.
